It started with one, and then look what happened….I know this is a talent that will go down well in algeria, i know that the in-laws will be impressed with me when I return with the ability to turn cotton into doilies, but those who know me well are starting to worry…BIG TIME…doilie making is not normal for me….but you know what/ they’re secretly making me happy…I always enjoy making something simple that looks complicated enough for people to think you’re a creative genius, and these are great for that…wonder what else I could make???

With my backstill seriously out of action for the second week running I had to stay home from a halaqah at my neighbours house on Friday, so to compensate we had a family Halaqah which proved to be very fruitful. We’re reading the stories of the prophets from this book, which has some questions at the back of it on each chapter so it was nice to quiz the children on what we had read and pleasantly surprising to find tht they had taken it all in masha’allah

image501.jpg

after reading and discussing the life of Nuh (alayhi sallam) we had an art session with each child drawing their version of the Ark. All in all it was a good Jumuah masha’allah. I like the fact that the children don’t have their lessons anymore on fridays which means we have freed up the day for doing things that remind us of Allah.

Otherwise the action is indefensible …. with my back still seriously out of action and while I’ve been keeping myself topped up with painkillers (ah actually maybe it’s BECAUSE I’m under the influence of painkillers) I’ve crocheted …… doilies… I always defended my love of crochet and promised my nearest and dearest I would never succumb but I have…and actually I quite like them ….. the pattern was a little complicated at but I’m figuring they’ll make someone a pretty little gift ….. a friend got the crochet cotton from freecycle, when we were discussing the potential for crochet lessons, and I think I may have foud out next class project!!!

This what you do when you’re laid up in bed all day with a back that won’t work properly….. far be it from me to use the oppertunity to laze around looking idle, (more’s the pity) so I finally tackled my hat woe’s …. I have been trying to make a hat for months, and I was despairing of ever finding the right pattern, but here it is, my very first hat ….. and I love it! …it’s not perfect, the first of anything always has an imperfection or two buton the whole I’m pleased with it, and the four year old in my life is happy with it too…. and actually the 16 year old in my life has asked for a bigger version to wear around the house(go figure that!) The origional pattern had no bobble but the hubster said it would be the perfect finishing touch!

the scallopped edging was actually the easiest bit!!

This is another WIP and as far as I can tell (for I am a fickle thing!) it’s going to be a flowery scarf ……

image448.jpg

I like them but they’re fiddly….and i tend to like working on projects that I can see the results of quickly, and I’ve figured I’m going to need alot more flowers yet!

It has to be said that I am not entirely at home with being a domestic wonder woman, I’m far happier sitting amongst a pile of books, or thinking or writing down thoughts and ideas etc….. but even I need the gentle rythms of looking after home and hearth sometimes. Today is one of those days, I feel the need to cook and tend house and feed the people I love ….. it’s almost like a medicine, a way of slowing down and applying a soothing balm to what has become a hectic routine lately.

You know sometimes it does you good to grab a bargain, despite the fact that the one thing I forgot to buy on Tuesday was my main reason for the trip to the market in the first place !

anyway we stocked up on some more books … with our move to Algeria moving ever closer we are now beginning to stock up on things that will make the whole experience a bit brighter, and books are one of the things we feel we cant be without, we’re still not sure whether we’ll be flying or driving so the logistics of getting our belongings there hasn’t quite been sorted out yet, but none the less, books will make up the bulk of our posessions

the four year old chose summer is a cominn and a mini version of the hungry caterpillar which has been bedtime reading for the last couple of nights masha’allah

image425.jpg

the boys seem to like these animal stories,

image424.jpg

and for the girly girl, who is devouring books  like there’s no tomorrow some thing a bit more erm….girly?

image423.jpg

and mama even got something for herslelf, a new crochet hook for the new project she’s started, (tell you about that later!)and some nice bright embroidery floss,

image429.jpg

and some really finky edging which my pic really doesnt do justice to…er, the yellow cotton I initially went out for will have to wait for another day now!But then that always gives me another excuse ……

image428.jpg

by a friend who came to crochet yesterday, I’m not sure what they’ll become though…..

It’s a new love, it’s sponge on the bottom and tastes like apple crumble on top …… ah, it’s the simple pleasures masha’allah.

image336.jpg

I’m ridden with cold after getting caught in the rain yesterday en route to a Halaqah and I’m fighting that head fog that seems to loom about my brain almost constantly. I’ve begun to feel like that boy in charlie brown who wanders around in his own mist all the time, only I think mine’s quite possibly nicer than his. If I’m making no sense I apologise, I’m fighting the funk by throwing myself at some studies and by upping the ante with dhikr. it’s working of course but I’m feeling a bit slow on the uptake and in need of some me time. DD16 is making mugs of hot choccy which I’m sure will help put things into perspective…chocolate in any form usually helps heaps …and then it’s off to tackle the inside of my fridge and some comfort cooking so that I can endulge in an early night with my book …. I had a tajweed lesson this morning which might account for the lack of brain power this afternoon …. at least the tajweed is going well masha’allah. And now to demolish the hot choccy …..

Friday is a holiday in our house, the weekly “Eid” of the Muslim’s which means no tutor, and no homeschool and despite the sickness that’s been hanging over our house since yesterday, the children brought out the playdough and created ….
